Manchester United fans have a sneaking suspicion that the collapse of David De Gea had something to do with Ed Woodward’s internet alter-ego.
In reality, Woodward is a savvy businessman who has closed a couple of extraordinary deals during his time at United.
In the eyes of United supporters hanging about Twitter, Woodward is a slick pulls-no-punches rebel who would troll a legendary club like Real Madrid in a heartbeat.
Mind you, it’s not just United fans who believe this. Jose Luis Sanchez, a reporter for El Chiringuito TV, thinks United sent documents late to claim a moral victory.
It’s not all that far-fetched.
Reports were rife earlier in the summer that United were adamant that they wouldn’t sell De Gea to Madrid unless they got Sergio Ramos in return.
This didn’t happen and, although nobody at United commented on the existence of such a stance, it made the English giants look like mugs.
Could this be revenge? Or was it genuine human error? Is it even off the table? We wouldn’t be surprised to see the deal pushed through.
A section of United supporters and the internet don’t care about the saga, preferring to raise a glass to the banter king persona they’ve attached to Ed Woodward.

The accounts bragging they had inside info confirming De Gea had already signed ..are..where exactly? Lesson: this is just twitter.

If De Gea story is true: Man Utd have a good goalkeeper this season after all, but one who is likely to leave on a free next summer.

Everyone is loving Woodward for not selling De Gea as if Man Utd couldn't capitalise on any good talent. Pedro is an example.

Real miss out on De Gea by one minute, absolute Twitter meltdown and barcastuff are like "Pic: Vermaelen out with his girlfriend & children"
— Neymarred (@Neymarred) August 31, 2015
I don't get it. If De Gea has to stay, he's not going to want to play is he?
— [AR] (@ArsenalRealm) August 31, 2015
On one hand, it’s great that United have kept De Gea and sends out a symbolic victory for them that they’ve kept their star player.

This De Gea thing has to be the funniest thing ever , funnier than when Odewminge drove his car and left him in the parking lot

I wanna see De Gea's reaction pls

If Real Madrid miss out on De Gea, will Benitez's anti-United speech this time be "I want to talk about FAX" ?
— Rob Harris (@RobHarris) August 31, 2015
Above all, I feel bad for De Gea. He'll be forced to renovate his contract if he doesn't want to stay half a season in the stands.
— BlancoEdition (@BlancoEdition) August 31, 2015
If this is true, and it ends with De Gea signing due to Euro's, I will tattoo Woodward's name on my leg. Swear. https://t.co/tWG6HjUB6v

#MUFC fans, wouldn't you prefer to have sold De Gea for £30 million rather than have him rot in the reserves and go for free? Will he play?
