Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal optimistic Luke Shaw will return this season

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is optimistic Luke Shaw will return to the playing squad before the end of the season.

The defender suffered a double fracture to the right leg after a challenge from Hector Moreno during United's Champions League group stage defeat to PSV on Tuesday and will have surgery when he returns to Manchester on Wednesday.

Mexico international Moreno, who suffered a leg break at last summer's World Cup, apologised for his lunge after the game as the severity of Shaw's injury emerged.

The injury casts into doubt Shaw's chances of playing for England at next summer's European championships, but Van Gaal remains hopeful the 20-year-old will feature again this term.

The club have not yet had professional advice regarding the timescale of the former Southampton man's rehabilitation period but the United boss suggested Shaw will now have a spell on the sidelines lasting up to six months.

“I’m not a doctor so I cannot say, but when you have a double fracture it is four to six months," the Dutchman said.

"But you can never say that in advance. He won’t play in the group stage, I don’t think. I hope he will play again this season.”
