Tottenham transfer news: Spurs told Axel Witsel will cost £73m

Axel Witsel's suitors have been warned off the Belgian midfielder by Zenit St Petersburg.

The 26 year-old is coveted by a host of clubs including Juventus, AC Milan and Tottenham.

But Zenit today insisted that the Witsel would only be sold if a club were to meet the substantial €100 million (£72.8m) release clause on his contract.

"The Belgian is still a Zenit player, the amount for his release clause is €100 million,” said a statement from TASS, Zenit’s press service.

Spurs are in the market for a midfielder following the departures of several players including Lewis Holtby, Paulinho, Etienne Capoue and Benjamin Stambouli, this summer.

Southampton's Victor Wanyama remains a primary target for the North London side.
