According to Sky Sports, Southampton will today sign Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk from Celtic for £11.5m.

The Saints already have Jose Fonte, Maya Yoshida and Steven Caulker as options at the heart of their defence, however Ronald Koeman is thought to be keen to boost his options for the long season ahead.

Van Dijk’s departure from Celtic comes off the back of the Scottish champions early exit from this season’s Champions League. Celtic were turfed out the competition by Swedish side Malmo.

Van Dijk, 24, has been linked with a move to the Premier League for some time, as Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchesters United and City have all been rumoured to be chasing the defender in the past.

Celtic signed signed Van Dijk from Dutch side Groningen for £2.5m in June 2013, and the Eredivisie outfit are due to scoop a windfall from the Saints deal as they included a 10 per cent sell-on clause of any future transfer fee profits when they agreed to sell the defender to Celtic.
