Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho should understand the importance of player safety, warns Fabrice Muamba

Fabrice Muamba has warned Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho that he is putting his players at risk if he does not allow the club's medical staff to fulfill their duty.

The Portuguese tactician reacted furiously when doctor Eva Carneiro and physio Jon Fearn entered the field of play to treat Eden Hazard during the latter stages of the Blues' 2-2 draw against Swansea City on August 8.

Mourinho was aggrieved that Hazard had to leave the pitch in order to be treated as the Premier League champions had already been reduced to 10 men after Thibaut Courtois' dismissal and cited his staff's "naivety" as a reason behind his decision to remove the pair from the bench for the foreseeable future.

Muamba was forced into early retirement after suffering a heart attack while playing for Bolton against Tottenham in 2012 and the 27-year-old believes that Mourinho should understand the importance of his players' safety.

“Player safety is key, a player’s life is important. Once a player is injured, the doctor and physio both have a duty to come on," he told the Sun.

“That is something that Jose should be able to understand. Health and safety is very important. That’s why you need a clear understanding of what is required. A manager and a doctor should have open communications.”

Mourinho's decision to banish Carneiro and Fearn from the bench has been widely criticised but the Blues boss has hinted that they could be able to return to their roles on the sidelines in the future.
