Manchester United performances enough to keep Louis van Gaal from making further signings

Louis van Gaal is happy with his attacking options and remains adamant that he does not need to reinforce his forward line before the transfer window shuts.

The Dutchman was speaking after United's 0-0 draw with Newcastle on Saturday, in which only a marginal offside call denied the hosts a third successive 1-0 victory.

Replays were inconclusive as Wayne Rooney sprung forward in the fourth minute before placing the ball past Tim Krul, but Newcastle otherwise remained defensively resolute as United ran out of ideas in the final third.

United scarcely looked £80million better than the side which scrambled into the top four last term, but Van Gaal doubts whether reopening Ed Woodward's cheque book can provide the solution.

Asked if United needed to continue their spending spree, Van Gaal said: "No, because we were three times the best team.”

"My worry is that we have to dominate the opponent and we did it today, we did it against Aston Villa, Tottenham and [Club] Brugge.

"I am satisfied with the performance and not with the result and that is different.

"We were unlucky with rewarding ourselves because we have created a lot of chances."
